Traversing The African Culture

African dance cannot exist without music. It is so indispensable that no different words exist in the African language to distinguish between these two. Music and dance hold a more significant value than just having a good time in the African culture, contrary to the western civilizations. It has a higher purpose to serve. Generally, in different cultures, dance usually takes place between two individuals. However, in African culture, dance is performed by a group or community for a particular purpose. Such activities include initiation rites, a child’s naming ceremony, war times, agricultural activities, and performing the services of the dead.

Let Us Know The History Of African Dance

Slave labor commenced in the 1500s when Africans were brought as slaves to the Caribbean and North and South America. This event caused the merging of several African dance styles belonging to different ethnic groups. It blended with the contemporary forms of European dancing. Since dance played a very crucial role in the African daily lifestyle, many enslaved Africans continued to dance to cherish their cultural traditions. It also made them feel closer to their homeland.

The Africans enslaved in South America had more freedom than those working as slaves in the North and the Caribbean. The North American slave owners placed several restrictions on the African slaves concerning their dance. However, these restrictions were insufficient to waiver their spirit. The African slaves devised ways to sustain their traditions in secret. Thus, several changes occurred in their dance forms due to necessity. Anyone who loves dancing in African songs will genuinely enjoy it.

Unique African Music

Apart from using their voice, the Africans used an extensive array of musical instruments. They also used some harp-like instruments like fiddles and Kora. The use of lamellophones and xylophones was also common. For drums, West Africa used to talk drums, djembe, and bougarabou. Further, Central and Southern Africa used various kinds of Ngoma drums.

The Oral Tradition Among Africans

For such people, oral tradition was essential. The oral tradition helped in ensuring that cultural traditions passed through different generations.

The traditional oral practices perfected the art of listening, that was also a very vital skill. Various songs and dance forms passed through generations by this method. Therefore, one should respect them and take the initiative to know.
