Language

Swahili is the most commonly spoken language in Africa apart from the other 2000 local languages, but English is considered the official language here. So, you will have not have a tough time directing your taxi driver at the airport, but it is better to learn a few phrases in Swahili to charm yourself to the locals.

Locals

The locals here are funny, amusing, and friendly. As tourism is the main business in Africa, the locals are dependent on tourists to earn that extra buck. Expect to be greeted with warm smiles. They will all want to know your names and the country you have come from. Christianity and Islam are the two main religions here are they are both widely practiced. They are also conservative and so you need to cover yourself well.

Avoid Border Hassles

As bribery is quite rampant here, you can consider yourself to be lucky if you get your passport stamped without any hassles. Many tourists are asked to wait for several hours before they get their clearance or are asked to pay a bribe to get their passes. But if you know your visa requirements before visiting any country in Africa, you can save yourself from this corruption. You should also visit your local embassy for Africa travel tips. You should always have spare US dollars and the local currency. Be quick to convert when asked for money so that you know whether it is reasonable or not. Lastly, if you know that you are being falsely trapped and hassled, be stubborn and politely ask for your passport back. This will get them straight.

Local Travel in Africa

The best way to travel locally is by tuk-tuks, taxis, rickshaws, or other modes of transport. To get an up-close and personal experience of how the locals live, you should travel by minibus at least once. You will have to sit cramped up with 25 other people with little space and probably an old goat by your side.

Other Africa Travel Tips

It is better to travel during the day. You should also wear your seatbelt. Expect people to be late or early in Africa. Punctuality isn’t a virtue here. While traveling via a minibus, you might not get a seat for hours together. Always negotiate on everything from food items, travel fare, and other local items you purchase. Lastly, do not pay the bag storage fee while traveling by bus as your bus fee includes your baggage storage. If asked, consider it to a scam and beware.
